Everything You Need to Know About Winter Fabrics

Winter is fast approaching. Some of you may already be seeing jackets and coats on sale at your favorite retailer, while some of us are still holding out hope for a mild winter like last year (wishful thinking). Regardless of which group you fall into, it's never too early to start thinking about what fabrics will help keep you warm this winter. That's why we've put together this comprehensive article of everything you need to know about winter fabrics to help you make informed decisions when it comes time to buy your next winter coat or jacket. We'll focus on what fabrics and technologies will keep you warm as opposed to those that are merely fashionable (at least in our opinion).

By the end of this article, you should have a good idea of what fabrics to look for in your next winter coat, as well as some that to avoid completely.

Everything you need to know about winter fabrics

  • Cotton:

Cotton is the fabric of choice in summer and spring coats. It isn't suitable for winter clothing because it absorbs water and has zero insulating properties. This means that when you step outside after taking your cotton coat off, you'll immediately be wet and cold with no way to remedy the situation quickly (that's why we don't recommend cotton sweaters either). Additionally, cotton loses its shape in wet weather.

  • Leather and faux leather:

Leather coats are very fashionable at the moment and for good reason. Leather is an incredibly durable material that can last you many years with proper care (more on that later), it's windproof, water-resistant, and doesn't absorb much moisture which means it won't feel heavy when wet. However, leather coats are expensive, so if you are on a budget then faux leather coats are the better choice because they last just as long and cost significantly less.

The downside to faux leather is that it's not quite the real deal, but you can't beat the price. Faux leather can offer protection against wind and water, however, its ability to block out cold air isn't nearly as good as that of real leather (it absorbs and holds moisture like a sponge).

  • Wool

One of the best fabrics to keep you warm in cold weather is wool. It's an inherently flame-resistant fabric that has been used for many years to make winter clothing, like sweaters and coats. Wool is windproof and will keep you warm even when wet (although it does take a long time to dry). The most common type of wool is Merino wool which comes from the Merino sheep. This kind of wool is very fine and soft, making it perfect for winter clothing.

In addition to being flame-resistant, wool also has great wicking properties which means the moisture from perspiration is immediately taken away by the surrounding air. This in turn keeps you dry and comfortable even in cold weather when you start to sweat a little bit (as we all do).

The downside to wool is that it isn't very good at insulating when it's wet, so if you step outside with a wet wool sweater on you'll find yourself cold in no time.

  • Fur and faux fur

Fur coats have been fashionable for hundreds of years and rightfully so, they do a great job at keeping you warm. Even the furs from the lowest hanging regions of a fur coat will keep you wonderfully warm when it's cold out. That being said, most high fashion designers don't use actual fur in their collections because faux fur is more versatile (although this is starting to change).

The downside to fur is that if you wear it in wet weather, the water will quickly make it useless.

  • Fleece

The structure of fleece is very similar to that of wool (although it's not made from wool) and like most other natural fabrics, it doesn't insulate that well when wet. Fleece jackets are popular because they're lightweight and relatively cheap, but you'll need to wear something over top of them if the temperature is below freezing.

As a side note, you should never wash your fleece jacket in the washing machine because the fabric balls up and loses its structure – always dry-clean them instead.
