Difference between coats and jackets.
Coats –
Coat is considered to be one of the earliest clothing article to be coined in English. The word derives its essence from Old French and Latin word cottus while it originates from Proto-Indo-European world. The history states coats to be mid-length with long sleeves for men which would was fitted on the waist. With the onset of 20th century, people started confusing jackets with coats and vice versa.
In the 19th century, coats were usually categorised under two heads – under coats and overcoats. Undercoats where coats which were worn under the outer wear and overcoats where the coats which were the outermost layer of one’s attire for an event. With the advancement of the society and based on the demand, coats are usually used to refer to the overcoats.
Coats are an article of clothing which is worn as an outer wear by either of the genders. It extends from the neck to the hips when its for formal occasions. However, coats can be from neck to thighs or longer than that, for which the best example would be trench coats. Coats which come down till the waist are opted by many as it has a very formal look and gives the person wearing it a very clean and crisp look.
Most often than other, coats are longer than clothes when not worn for meetings or formal work-related events. Coats are open from the front with closing methods such as zippers or belts. Coats with belts are quite famous amongst the women. When compared with the basic design of jackets, coats are considered to be heavier duty pieces of outer wear for either genders.
Jackets–
The word jacket derives its name from a French word – Jaquette which meant a lightweight tunic. They are also referred to as short under coat. Jackets became famous after being seen in movies which led to the increase in demand for them.
Jackets are those article of clothing, which is worn on the outside, but it is the length of the clothing which sets it apart from coat. They are usually from neck to the waist along with a fastening method of either zippers or buttons. The fitting of the jackets are quite snug and provide a much more tighter fitting than coats.
Jackets are seen to be leaning more towards the informal side when compared to coats. Jackets are worn for semi-casual meetings, meeting up with friends or simply going out. Thematerial which is generally seen being used for jackets are lighter in comparison to coats however the material is soft and smooth. They are lighter in weight but provide warmth during winter season.
